Organizers:     The South Centre, The Group of 77 and China Geneva Chapter

Description:

This Brainstorming meeting is a South Centre-G77 and China initiative as part of the commemoration of the UN International Day for South-South Cooperation (SSC) and also,  in preparation for the upcoming UN Second Conference on SSC to be held in March 2019 in Argentina.

Held every year on September 12, the International Day on South-South Cooperation marks the day in which the very first UN Conference on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC), held in Argentina in 1978, was concluded with the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) for Promoting and Implementing TCDC. The BAPA is a blueprint document that guided efforts of the UN system and its Member States in promoting and advancing South-South Cooperation through the past four decades. This year we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the BAPA which makes this SC-G77 and China meeting on September 12 a special one. It reaffirms also the strategic importance, the value and work of the South Centre in support of its Member States, the G77 and China and its cooperation with the UN system as all will join hands to commemorate in a quite fairly important way and for the first time the UN South-South Cooperation Day in Geneva.

The commemorative event on the 12th of September aims to provide a platform for the G77’s members to brainstorm on and discuss the opportunities and challenges on the role of South-South Cooperation in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Senior officials from the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), the agency serving as the secretariat for the BAPA+40 process, the South Centre, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will be invited to speak during this workshop.
