Press release, 22 February 2016
The South Centre wishes to express its deepest condolences to the government and the people of Egypt for the passing away of Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali recently.
Mr. Boutros-Ghali was a giant in his support of multilateralism and an outstanding figure in promoting a more equitable world where peace should reign over war, and where the United Nations acts as an independent multilateral forum where big and small countries work together on an equal footing to eradicate poverty and promote development in developing countries.
After serving as UN Secretary-General and Secretary-General of La Francophonie, the South Centre had the privilege and the benefit of having Mr. Boutros-Ghali serve as the Chairman of the Board of the South Centre from 2002 to 2005. The South Centre has greatly benefited from his intellectual and political guidance, and will seek to continue his legacy of promoting the rights and interests of the peoples of the South in achieving development and eradicating poverty.
