Access to Covid-19 Vaccines, Medicines and Diagnostics: Voluntary and Compulsory Licenses, TRIPS Waiver
The South Centre and Médecins Sans Frontières Access Campaign organized a Webinar on 7 December at 2.00p.m. CET on patent licensing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The panel discussed the characteristics of intellectual property rights, voluntary licenses and their potential role for addressing the pandemic, including the territorial and other limitations that right-holders may impose. It also discussed the important role of compulsory licenses in improving voluntary licensing practices. The panel also reflected on the need to pursue the proposal for a TRIPS waiver to mitigate the limitations of the current mechanisms to support universal access to COVID-19 medicines, vaccines and diagnostics.
